Miss England Too Fat For Catwalk

Miss England, Laura ColemanCurvy Laura Coleman started her career as a skinny size 8 model.

However, opting for a healthier figure, is said to have ruined her catwalk and magazine career.

The 22-year-old blonde has gone up a dress size to a perfect 10 and now is being shunned by modeling agencies for being too fat.

Coleman said, “I really think the curvy girl should be promoted more as a positive image in the media. But the agencies seemed to have a problem with me when I wasn’t skinny any more.”

Eating disorder specialist Emmy Gilbert added: “The fashion world endorses an ideal which can be unattainable or, if achieved, highly dangerous.”

Laura is set to take part in The Miss World pageant in Johannesburg, South Africa, December 13th.

Amy Cremen Is Not The Biggest Loser

Amy Cremen Before and AfterWe went out to eat last night, at a new restaurant in town called Old Chicago. The place was packed! We had to wait around thirty minutes for a table. I know that isn't a terribly long wait but when you've got a toddler it sure is! We got home around 8:15 p.m. After giving Brady a bath and putting him to bed, I was only able to catch the last 20 minutes of The Biggest Loser.

By the time I tuned in, everyone was casting their votes. It ended up being a tie vote (Heba, Ed, and Vicky voted for Amy to go home and Renee, Michelle, and Amy voted for Heba to go home) and since Amy lost the least amount of weight this week (5 pounds) she was sent home.

Amy Cremen is a 27-year-old cosmetology student from Auburn Hills, Michigan. Amy and her mom, Shellay were my favorite contestants this season. They are now both out of the running for the $250,000 grand prize but are still eligible to win the at-home prize of $100,000.

Amy Cremen Before and After PhotosAmy started The Biggest Loser weighing 239 pounds and wearing size 22 clothes. Ten weeks later (and 66 pounds lighter), Amy left the ranch weighing 173 pounds. At the filming of Amy's "Where Are They Now" video, she was wearing size 8 clothes. Amy's goal is to weigh 125 pounds at the show's finale.

Following is an excerpt of an article I read online about Amy Cremen.

They (Amy and her mom, Shellay) threw themselves into the competition, working out for six to eight hours a day under the supervision of trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. "Our first day in the gym was a shock," Cremen recalls. "I couldn't even hold myself up for a 10-second wall squat." During that brutal first week, Cremen felt like quitting. "But I remembered that I was there for a reason, so I continued to give it my all," she says. Before long, she could tolerate the workouts and was amazed when she started looking forward to them. "Now I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I finish one," she says.

With her favorite vices--Oreos, Mountain Dew, and fast food--forbidden at the ranch, Cremen learned to count calories (she was limited to about 1,200 a day, says Cheryl Forberg, R.D., the show's nutritionist) and to cook healthy meals. "One of my favorites is lean ground turkey, brown rice, and salsa. It's easy, and one cup has only about 200 calories," Cremen says. "I've learned that there is life outside of fast food."

Since returning home, Cremen has been working out for two to four hours per day, including one hour of cardio. "Spinning is by far my favorite exercise," she says. She and Shellay, who lost more than 27 pounds, also work out three times a week with their personal trainer.

Do you worry about gaining back some of the lost pounds?
Maintaining is the easy part! I’m committed to building my body up instead of tearing it down. I still love to eat. But now I count every calorie and try to get as much satisfaction as I can without going over 1,200 per day. I have a philosophy: If I can’t taste it, I don’t waste it. I won’t put cheese on a sandwich if it’s not going to really affect the flavor.

Do you still do grueling workouts?
I go to the gym at least five days a week, and I hike or swim outside once a week. That’s my relaxing time. I’ll never, ever, ever take three days off from the gym. I went to the gym the other day and ran for only 20 minutes. But I still went to the gym.

What’s the best workout for fast results?
Whenever Bob and Jillian thought someone on the show was in trouble, I noticed they’d put them on the stairmill. I do 20 to 30 minutes on that, then switch to the rowing machine for 10 more to keep from getting bored.

How do you stick with it day in and day out? Any advice?
If you start making excuses not to exercise, that’s a reason to change your routine—it’s not a reason to stop working out. Even trainers have trainers, so consider investing in one. Healthy people choose to be healthy. They set themselves up to win.

Following is Amy's "Where Are They Now?" video transcript:

When I started on the Biggest Loser campus, I was a size 22 and now I'm a size 8.

Now that I'm home, Michigan State University has been supporting me by giving me use of all of their athletic trainers. Plus, my mom and I are going to do this change together.

I think when you have a really good support system, it helps a lot. But the best part is how good I feel about myself and how confident I am to do things the old Amy would've never done... like singing in front of a whole lot of people. (Video shows Amy singing The Star Spangled Banner at a sporting event.)

Now I can just go out there and show the world what I've got.

Man drops 140 pounds in 11 months to join Marines

Ulysses Milana

Ulysses Milana, of Lewiston, lost 140 lbs., down from 330, to accomplish his goal of enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Milana lost 20 pounds per month over the past year by changing his eating habits, going to the gym and giving up beer.

Can you say INSPIRING? Wow, this guy is something else.

Army and Navy recruiters took one look at 330-pound Ulysses Milana, in December 2007, and told him to forget about joining. "You've got to lose weight," Milana remembers them saying.

But Marine recruiters were willing to help 23-year-old Milana by developing a workout regimen.

"You can sit there and preach and preach, but if you're not willing to help, then it doesn't lead you to success," Staff Sgt. George Monteith said. "If I say, 'Go lose weight and I'll see you in a year,' then what kind of help have I offered to make that happen?"

Eleven months later, Milana was 140 pounds lighter as he boarded a plane last week, headed for Parris Island, S.C., to begin boot camp.

It wasn't easy, Milana said, but he managed to slim down through exercise, healthier eating habits and giving up beer.

Milana said he always wanted to follow in his family's footsteps by serving his country. His wife, Latoya, also comes from a military family.

A former culinary student, Milana said it was a challenge to give up favorites like pizza and hot wings, but cracking open a cold beer after work was perhaps the toughest guilty pleasure to abandon.

"It was really hard. You see all your friends drinking beer, and you're like, 'Oh, man, I want one,'" he said. But his determination kept him on track, and he would head for the gym or don a head lamp and go out for a run.

The story of Milana's 140 pound weight loss has become a sensation. He's receiving fan mail from around the globe. In Maine, his wife, Latoya, finds her phone flooded with offers for movies, documentaries and even a weight-loss product endorsement. Her husband's MySpace inbox overflows with nearly 200 messages and friend requests.

Since Milana is only allowed to contact family via regular mail during the grueling two months of boot camp, Latoya said her husband isn't even aware of the national stir his story caused since he left.

"He has no idea, really," Latoya Milana said, adding that she was awaiting a letter from her husband with his contact information. "

Since Milana's story ran last Monday, Nov. 17, on the front page of the Sun Journal, staff at the paper and the family have received e-mails, phone calls and requests from everyone from fellow Marines to television producers wanting to touch base with the young man they say inspired them.

Latoya responded to each e-mail sent to her husband on his MySpace page. She points out that no two are alike and she wanted to reply personally to people who took time to thank Milana for his inspiration.

Given that Milana has no contact with the outside world at this point, Latoya wonders how he will react when he learns about the publicity he's gained, and about the movie offers. She said her husband, whom she has known for eight years, is one of the most private people she knows. Latoya also stressed that her husband lost the weight to realize his dream of joining the armed forces, not to gain fame and fortune.

"He likes to help people and he likes to inspire people, and I'm not even sure he realizes how much he did that," Latoya said. "I'm proud. I'm very, very proud that my husband was able to inspire so many people."

Nine Years Ago Today

Paul and Laura EilersYup, he's a goofball - but he's all mine.

Today, we celebrated nine years of wonderful wedded bliss.

What did we do, you ask?

Well, we started out the day by dropping on our three blogs. Then we finished decorating the inside of the house for Christmas, while Paul worked on a blog post about his beloved ECU winning their division championship Saturday.

Next, we went outside to put up the Christmas lights. I'm sure the neighbors think we're nuts but they've thought that for years. I know Thanksgiving isn't here yet, but there's only 32 days until Christmas! Can you tell Christmas is my favorite holiday?

Anyway, three hours later we finished. By then, everyone was hungry. We needed to pick up a couple things from Lowe's to finish the outside, so we piled in the car and headed out. Dylan, Brady, and I waited in the car while Paul ran into Lowe's. When he came back, we headed to Subway for a romantic anniversary dinner with the kids. Paul and I split a footlong turkey sub. I told you it was romantic!

We originally planned on going out for a nice romantic dinner, and possibly seeing a movie but getting the house decorated for Christmas was more of a priority to me. My extended family is coming to our house for Thanksgiving and I wanted everything to look festive. So in other words, I got what I wanted for my anniversary.

Paul says it took him many years but he's finally got me trained! Yeah, whatever. I love you, honey!

Laura

11 Tips to Help You Enjoy the Holidays Without Packing on the Pounds

New Years Eve PartyDuring the holidays, food temptations are around every corner. Family get-togethers, office parties, and tins packed with homemade goodies offer little escape. But if you follow the eleven tips below, you’ll survive the season a little happier and healthier.

Following is a summary. If you would like to read the entire article, click here.

1. Psych yourself

Don't tell yourself, "It's okay, it's the holidays." That opens the door to 6 weeks of splurging.

2. Back away from the food

As obvious as it sounds, don't stand near the food at parties. At a buffet? Eating a little of everything guarantees high calories. Decide on three or four things, only one of which is high in calories. Save that for last so there's less chance of overeating.

3. Stop, drop and roll

Instead of burning the candle into the wee hours every night, just STOP what you're doing; DROP into bed; and ROLL over! Studies have shown that a lack of sleep can cause weight gain.

4. Get moving!

It's all about calories in vs. calories out, so make exercise a nonnegotiable priority. Try squeezing exercise minutes into each day to get your heart pumping. Ten minutes is better than nothing. In fact, 10 minutes in the morning is often the best time for weight loss during the holiday since our days get busy with extra to-do’s and social events.

Holiday party spread5. Stick with the 5-a-day plan

Make sure to get your fruits and vegetables. The excess sugar often consumed during the holidays gives us an energy high and then a crash. So fill up on healthy food -- eat five fruits and vegetables a day BEFORE you allow yourself to snack on holiday treats.

6. Don't be tempted by temptation

Avoid constantly putting yourself in situations that tempt you. For example, don’t walk through the break room at work 10 times a day when you know it's filled with holiday treats and candies. Spend a few minutes in the morning packing a healthy snack (like almonds, a piece of fruit or a yogurt) so you'll have a healthy weight-loss alternative. Remember, EAT before you meet. Have this small meal before you go to any parties: a hard-boiled egg, an apple, and a thirst quencher (water, seltzer, diet soda, tea).

7. Liquid calories count

Holidays are notorious for tempting us with drinks we wouldn't normally consume. Alcohol offers no nutrients - just empty calories, and we often forget to count them. Eggnog coffee drinks with whipped cream, hot toddies, spiced rum, these drinks can have as many calories as a personal pan pizza! If you want to go for the alcohol, alternate alcoholic drinks with diet-friendly, calorie-free sparkling water.

Thanksgiving dinner8. Be social and generous

Take your camera and be the designated photographer. You can't eat while snapping wriggling kids. Brush up your small talk; talking slows down eating. And finally, give it away! After your party company leaves, give away leftover food to neighbors, doormen, or delivery people, or take it to work the next day.

9. Save it for something special

Indulge only in new, interesting foods; have one taste of each. Avoid feeling deprived and distracted by food all evening long - allow yourself one dessert or holiday truffle per event. When you’re done, destroy the plate. If you've had enough to eat but others are still picking, dump salt over any food you have left.

10. Pace yourself

Eating slowly doesn't just decrease the amount of food you consume, it also fills you up faster. Healthy women who were instructed to wolf down their meals ate more food (by nearly 70 calories) but felt less satisfied than women who were told to take their time (21 minutes longer, to be exact), according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. To get into a slower rhythm, take smaller bites, chew thoroughly, and put your fork down between each one.

11. Write it down

Just the simple act of recording what you eat can help you cut calories. In a recent study of 1,685 adults published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the more food records a person kept, the more weight they lost. For a modern method, try e-mailing the information to yourself or using a computer program such as http://www.prevention.com/foodlog.

Kung Fu Panda Rocks

Kung Fu PandaMy fifteen-year-old son, Dylan, saw Kung Fu Panda with his dad and uncle this past summer.

Ever since the video was released last week, he has been bugging us to death to rent the video. Well, I broke down and bought the DVD for him today as an early Christmas present.

We all sat down in the living room and watched it tonight. I thought the movie was delightful from beginning to end.

First of all, Jack Black, is one of my favorite performers and he heads the voice cast as Po the Panda.

I don't want to be a spoiler and tell you all about the movie but it's definitely worth seeing. Go watch it and then come back tell me what you thought about it.

My favorite line in the movie is: "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow's a mystery. But today is a gift. That's why they call it the present." -- Master Oogway

Coleen Skeabeck Is Not The Biggest Loser

Coleen Skeabeck Before and AfterColeen Skeabeck, a 23-year-old receptionist from Cleveland, Ohio, was sent home last night.

Unfortunately, Coleen only lost 3 pounds this week, which made her drop below the yellow line.

'Icky' Vicky Vilcan, was also below the yellow line - in large part because she received a one pound penalty (bestowed upon her by Michelle).

Amy C. was the swing vote and I just KNEW she would vote Vicky off the show but noooooo! For some reason (I can't figure out), she decided to send Coleen home. I was shocked and appalled. In my opinion, Amy C. had nothing to lose and everything to gain by voting Vicky off. No matter who she voted for, she was going to be in a precarious position (being on the blue team with members that don't care whether she stays or goes). Why not get rid of the thorn in your side? I mean, the girl (Vicky) made Amy C's week a living hell. If Amy C. drops below the yellow line next week, she's gone. She's now made enemies with both the black and blue teams.

Coleen started The Biggest Loser weighing 218 pounds. Nine weeks later and 51 pounds lighter, she left the show weighing 167 pounds. Coleen's goal is to weigh 147 pounds and be wearing a size 8 by the show's finale.

Following is the transcript from Coleen's "Where Are They Now?" video:

When I started The Biggest Loser, I was in a size 22 pants and now I'm in a size 10 and it's so incredible to even say I'm in size 10 pants.

Before The Biggest Loser, my dad I - we just didn't work out. It was not in our scheduled daily kind of life. We sat on the couch. We ate horrible, crappy food and didn't really care what we were doing to our bodies.

For me, working out with my dad is just so very special because the first week we arrived at the ranch, my dad was so unfit he couldn't even walk on the treadmill. And now, he can run, he can bike, and he can do anything and that's fantastic.

Coleen's dad, Jerry: "Coleen was obviously following in my footsteps when it came to being overweight. I can't explain to you how, as a dad, to see a problem that I had, and my child was following in my footsteps and to see her the way she is now. Awesome, I love it. What an experience."

When I weighed 218 pounds, my clothing selection, was first of all, slim to none... I mean, completely frumpy. I dressed way older than I was and confused people when I told them I was only 23 years old.

Before coming on The Biggest Loser, I always dreamed about being able to just buy an article of clothing off the rack - not even have to try it on, just know exactly what size I wanted to wear.

The first time I put on a pair of size 10 jeans, I thought someone actually misplaced the tag on the jeans and I couldn't believe that they were mine. I mean, I was literally shocked that a pair of 10's fit on my body.

It's okay to dream the impossible dreams. I don't know, it's just like before, I never ever thought they would happen. There's just absolutely no limits now. I mean, nothing can hold me back. Nothing can stop me from reaching my dreams.
-- Coleen Skeabeck

Wheel of Fortune Open Call in Conway

Wheel of FortuneMy daughter, Rachael, and I went to a Wheel of Fortune open-call audition that was held in the town where I live (Conway, Arkansas) last Saturday.

While reading the Saturday paper, I read the Friday auditions drew over 3,000 people. Not knowing how early we should arrive, I decided to go check it out a couple hours before the 4 o'clock show time. It was windy and cold Saturday, so Rachael and I were both decked out in our coats, scarves and gloves. Luckily, there was plenty of room inside the building. There were probably three hundred people in line when we got there.

While in line, everyone was given an application to complete. At 3:30 p.m., they opened up the gate and everyone dropped their applications into the box as they passed through. Rachael and I sat in the bleachers closest to the front.

Laura holding a mini WheelmobileTraveling road show host, Marty Lublin, made the wait worthwhile. He is hilarious! Marty emphasized that personality was key to possibly being chosen to play the real game in Los Angeles. Marty asked each contestant a round of questions like, "What is your name? What do you do? What do you like to do in your spare time?" Whenever someone mentioned they like to dance or sing, he would have them perform on stage. But the funniest thing to me was how he would spin the wheel and then leap into the air to announce the prize the wheel landed on. You'd have to see it to really get how funny it was. Then, like clockwork he'd say, "But ... that's ... not ... ALL!!! Anyway, the whole thing was highly entertaining.

I guess you can tell it doesn't take much to entertain me!

Laura

Invisible Mother

Invisible Mother

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store.

Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously, not.

No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.

I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she is gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England ..

Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.

I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself.

I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription:

'To My Dear Friend, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.

These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.

They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.

The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place.

It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life.
It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.

The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're going to love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.

And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

This is one of those emails that gets forwarded around to everyone. A friend of mine from work sent it to me Friday morning. It made me cry it was so touching. I hope y'all enjoyed it.

Brady Vilcan Is Not The Biggest Loser

Brady VilcanBrady Vilcan, a 36-year-old pharmacist from Houma, LA, was sent home last night.

The Biggest Loser was really great last night because they brought back all the contestants who had previously been sent home (except Coleen's dad, Jerry). These contestants all competed for a spot to stay on the ranch for at least one more week.

The contestants had to go up and down a step until someone reached 1000 steps. It was an exciting challenge. I was yelling at the TV, "Go Stacey, GO!!! Girl Power, Girl Power, Girl Power!" She almost won, but Ed beat her out. Ed's wife, Heba was elated of course.

Once Ed won the challenge, he joined the blue team members (Ed, Heba, Brady, Vicky, and Amy C). At the beginning of the season, Brady and his wife, Vicky, formed an alliance with Ed and his wife, Heba. Because of this tight alliance, Amy C. was in a vulnerable position. Her situation became even more precarious once Ed was reunited with the blue team.

After the weigh-in, Brady and Michelle dropped below the yellow line (they both lost the least amount of weight - with Brady losing the least: six pounds).

Normally, the contestants are given time to discuss with one other who they want to send home, but in this case, after the weigh-in, they were brought into a room and instructed to vote immediately.

The three black team members (Renee, Michelle, and Coleen) naturally voted to send Brady home. The blue team alliance members (Brady, Vicky, Ed, and Heba) voted to send Michelle home. Breaking ranks (saying it was time to look out for herself for a change), Amy C. voted to send Brady home (yea Amy!) which made it a tie between Brady and Michelle. Since Brady lost the least amount of weight, he had to leave the ranch.

I didn't have a problem with Brady (though his cockiness was a bit annoying) but his wife - oh my goodness - where to start! Vicky is downright hateful. I truly hope she doesn't become The Biggest Loser. What a bummer that would be.

Brady started The Biggest Loser weighing 341 pounds. Eight weeks later and 77 pounds lighter, he left the show weighing 264 pounds. As of the filming of Brady's "Where Are They Now?" video, he has lost a total of 100 pounds! He hopes to lose another 30 pounds before the show's finale.

Following is the transcript from Brady's "Where Are They Now?" video:

Upon arriving at the ranch, I wore a size 48 pants with a big gut hanging over the top of them. Now I'm happy to say that today, I wear a size 34 waist pants.

Looking back at the old Brady makes me feel like, "What the hell was I thinking?" I mean, you got two very young children, one of whom is heading down the same lifestyle path that her mom and I were both on.

In the past, their old dad would use food as rewards for everything. They bring home an A on their report card or something - "Hey, let's get pizza!", "Let's go out and get ice cream with extra fudge on it! Hey, you know, dad will have a bit of that too."

One of the great things that we've started implementing was biking down to the local market. You know, I let them (daughter-Lucy and son-Chance) start picking out what kind of fruits and vegetables they want to have for the week. I think the fact that they actually have a hand in choosing which vegetables and fruits they're getting for the week, makes them more apt to try things.

Lucy: "My dad's trying to teach me to eat salads and stuff."

I can finally give Lucy and Chance the father I've always wanted to be for them and never could.

Bacon Is A Vegetable

Country Fried BaconI thought the t-shirt the guy was wearing was funny, so I decided to make that my title.

So, have you heard of this? Country-fried bacon. I mean, C'mon! You might as well call this appetizer, Heart Attack Strips! Oh yeah, it's also served with a side of gravy!

Just this month, Risque Cafe in Lake View (north side neighborhood in Chicago) unveiled this culinary masterpiece.

Look, I love bacon - even though I rarely eat it. But I don't like bacon enough to batter and deep fry it. Yuck. It just doesn't look or sound appetizing to me.

What do you think?

Stacy Allendorf Lost 120 Pounds!

Doesn't she look incredible? Stacy Allendorf lost a whopping 120 pounds!

“I remember physically feeling healthy, but emotionally I was shy and lacked confidence,” said Stacy Allendorf, a 49-year-old teacher from Columbia, SC.

At her largest, 288 pounds, Stacy struggled with her fragile self-confidence as she turned to food to ease stress and give her temporary comfort.

After marrying and giving birth to her son, Stacy suffered a string of setbacks and challenges that held her back emotionally and physically. She separated from her husband three weeks after the birth, then reconciled two months later; she transferred to a new school district with a difficult boss; and then, the most heartbreaking, her younger brother died in a car crash.

“My life became my job and my son,” Stacy said of her inability to pay proper attention to her body. “Everything else, me included, took a huge backseat for many years.”

When stressed or overwhelmed with either her job or a personal obstacle, Stacy turned to food. Fried foods and starches quickly became an addiction she felt incapable of controlling. “There were no limits to a serving size,” she said. “Pizza and hamburgers became a staple.”

Stacy traces her poor eating habits to a challenging childhood. Although she recalls a generally happy upbringing, playing outdoors and biking with neighbors, she spent a large amount of time eating sweets and baking desserts with her mother. When she hit puberty, she became bigger, which led her two brothers to nickname her “pig,” a hurtful term they used liberally.

“Because I was so body-conscious, I became less active,” she said of her teenage years, in which she fluctuated between 160-178 pounds.

“I felt awkward and clumsy. Becoming less active led to boredom and boredom meant snacking." She regained some self-confidence when she started college, but campus life proved disastrous to her diet: Too much work and stress combined with a food-loving boyfriend only intensified her poor eating habits.

In 2003, Stacy was diagnosed with adult onset diabetes. Instead of changing her lifestyle, Stacy continued her bad eating habits.

It was only the following year Stacy realized the extent of her lifestyle. During her son's freshman year in college, he put on over 40 pounds. Even worse, their weekly get-togethers consisted of going out for donuts or bagels.

“He didn't move," she said. “I knew the road he was going down - my road! I finally saw my future retirement was going to be me lying around, slowly dying, unable to enjoy what could be the very best time of my life."

To celebrate her commitment to change (and her birthday), Stacy ordered an exercise machine and got moving. She began with 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, and set a strict low-fat diet that required 1200-1500 calories a day.

To stay focused, she kept track of her calories and exercise in a food journal. In just two weeks, Stacy noticed physical changes. "But it still took months before others noticed," she said of her early progress. "That’s how ridiculously obese I was."

So as not to deprive herself, Stacy's plan included allowing one big, but healthy treat every week. Typically it was a four oz. filet with a baked sweet potato, with brown sugar. Then once per month, she allowed herself an extravagant splurge like key lime pie or vegetable pizza.

Stacy lost 70 pounds the first year and 50 pounds the following year. She has maintained her 120 pound weight loss for over a year. Stacy credits her incredible weight loss to taking baby steps and rewarding herself for successes along the way.

“It was hard giving up my mother's fudge and carrot cake,” she said. “Now if I want to indulge, I can, but only a little. It’s the overindulgence that should be avoided.”

Now, at 163 pounds, Stacy has reversed the diabetes. She staved off high cholesterol and heart disease.

“Eventually I was able to work out one to two hours daily and loved it,” she said. “You also have to be selfish with your time - I guarded my workout time like a bulldog - and surround yourself with people who love and support you.”

Stacy is thankful that food no longer overwhelms her daily existence; it doesn’t shadow her social life or offer comfort as it did in the past. “Instead of getting a big meal I now share hors d'oeuvres with friends,” she said. “Life now revolves around: movies, going to parks and walking.”

More importantly, her son, following his mother's lead, lost the weight and is living a healthy, happy lifestyle. “My son said at dinner one night, ‘mom you're just so much happier now.’ And it’s true, I am so very different because I feel good.”

Congratulations Obama Supporters - You Got Your Man

History has been made.

Fifty nine million, seventy five thousand, nine hundred thirty voters are disappointed today including me.

The overwhelming reason people voted for Obama is because of the current state of the economy. They linked John McCain with President Bush and they wanted change.

And as President-elect Obama so eloquently said, "It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America."

President-elect Barack Obama is a great speech giver. I just hope he's a good president.

Time will tell.

I Voted!

LauraPaul and BradyWe just got back from voting. See my "I Voted" sticker? Yes, even adults like getting a sticker.

We decided to go at 3pm hoping it would be a slower time. Luckily, we were right! There was no line at all.

Our son, Brady, had to help Daddy vote.

I Confess... I'm a Political Junkie

It's true, I'm a political junkie. In high school, my favorite class was Civics. If you catch me watching TV, nine times out of ten, it'll be the news - and politics in particular.

The New York Post has published a graphic map for election day that highlights the battleground states, with poll closing times, and trends to watch for as the evening unfolds. I thought it was pretty cool.

How To Watch The Election
I'm conservative, so McCain's my man. The fact that he's the underdog is just icing on the cake. The presidential election is something I always look forward to. I'll be glued to the tube all night long.

I wonder if the prediction I made many months ago will be correct. I told my husband we'll go to bed election night and still not know who the president is. I think it's gonna be a nail biter.

I love Fall!

Laura and BradyIn case you missed my last post, I bombed out on the 40 day fast - but I did accomplish a 26 day fast! I took a break from fasting today but I plan on starting another fast tomorrow. There's only fourteen days until the big 'family portrait day'!

The kids and I went for a bike ride today. The weather couldn't have been nicer. The high today was 76°.

Our city has two colleges - Hendrix (1200 students) and Central Baptist (800 students) and one university - UCA (13,000 students).

We live closest to UCA but we love cruising Hendrix's campus. Our favorite part of the trip is going over the pedestrian bridge that crosses over one of Conway's busiest streets. It's too steep for me to ride all the way up but it's a blast riding downhill!Rachael, Dylan and Brady

My daughter, Rachael, wanted to bring the camera along so we could take some pictures of the fall foliage. The beautiful tree you see in the pictures belongs to a neighbor of ours, just around the corner from where we live.

I love the picture of the kids (clockwise: Rachael-26, Brady-19 mos. and Dylan-15). That one's going on my computer slideshow! :)

I hope y'all are having a great weekend!

Laura
