Fitness Myths Busted

Woman lifting a dumbbellWorking out and eating right is difficult enough - buying into popular exercise misconceptions can make it even tougher.

Arm yourself with the facts to keep you slim, strong and motivated to reach your goals.

Check out the following myths and facts from SELF magazine:

MYTH: Muscle turns into fat

REALITY: Muscle and fat are two completely different tissues that have different functions, so it's physiologically impossible to turn one into the other. If you stop exercising, your muscles atrophy, so you lose the tone you worked so hard to create. And if you eat more calories than you burn, you'll gain fat.

MYTH: You need to exercise 30 minutes straight to get fit.

REALITY: Three 10-minute cardio stints offer the same healthy payback as a single 30-minute one. If you are trying to peel off pounds, of course, the more you do, the faster you'll succeed. But don't feel guilty if all you can squeeze in is a few minutes here and a few minutes there—it all adds up.

Short on time? Ratchet up the intensity of your workout: Go hard for 30 seconds on the elliptical or jog for a minute in the middle of your walk to maintain your fitness level and your habit. And remember, anything you do—whether it's a brisk 5-minute walk or carrying heavy groceries to your car—for any period of time, provides some benefit.

MYTH: Overweight people have a sluggish metabolism.

REALITY: Though some folks do have metabolic disorders that slow their metabolism, fewer than 10 percent of overweight people suffer from them. In fact, the more you weigh, the more calories you'll burn during exercise at the same relative workload as a slimmer person. If you notice the scale climbing higher, worry about your activity level, not your metabolism.

MYTH: Lifting heavy weights make women bulk up.

REALITY: Women don’t have enough of the muscle-building hormone testosterone to get bulky, even using heavy weights. The truth is, some people will gain muscle faster than they lose fat, so they may look bigger until they shed some of the flab and reveal the slim, toned muscles underneath. Shape sleek muscles with this workout from The Biggest Loser's Jillian Michaels.

MYTH: You can’t lose any weight by swimming.

REALITY: It’s true that long-distance swimmers who navigate colder waters tend to retain body fat for insulation. But ask anyone who laps it up while training for a triathlon: You will sizzle off pounds in the pool, since swimming burns 450 to 700 calories an hour! One reason you might not shed flab doing freestyle? If you throw in the towel and cut your workout short.

MYTH: Stretching before exercise prevents injuries and enhances performance.

REALITY: Researchers are still scratching their head over this one, since studies have yet to show conclusively that limbering up has any effect on staving off strains and other injuries. But they do know that stretching regularly can make bending, reaching, twisting and lifting easier. Best move: Save your stretching for post-exercise, when muscles are warm.

MYTH: You burn more calories exercising in chilly weather.

REALITY: If you shiver through a long run in the frigid winter air simply to experience the extra calorie burn, you might want to come in from the cold: You do torch a few extra calories during the first few minutes, but once you get warmed up, the caloric expenditure is the same whether you’re exercising in Siberia or the Sahara. Try a treadmill circuit workout with a great playlist to keep you going!

MYTH: When your body gets used to an exercise, you'll burn fewer calories doing it.

REALITY: Unless you've adjusted the intensity, you'll burn as much jogging or cycling today as you did last week, last month, even last year. Experts say that this principle only applies to exercises that we're naturally inefficient at, such as using the elliptical machine: After five to six sessions, you'll be smoother in your movements and expend fewer calories—but the difference is only about 2 to 5 percent.

MYTH: The calorie readout on machines is accurate.

REALITY: If only! Research has shown that some types of machines can be off by as much as 70 percent. The culprit? Contraptions such as the elliptical machine haven’t been around long enough for exercise scientists to develop the appropriate calorie-burn equations. On the upside, stationary bikes and treadmills, the grandfathers of the gym, generally give a fairly precise reading, particularly if you enter your age and weight.

Rather than swearing by what the machine says, use the calorie readout to monitor your progress. If the tally climbs during the same workout for the same duration, you’re working harder and getting fitter. An online calorie calculator can give you a sense of which activities burn the most.

Ever Heard of Ear Candles?

Dylan burning an ear candleLaura burning an ear candleIt's not every day you see someone burning a candle in their ear, right?

Well, the truth is, it's not really a candle... but I'll explain later.

My daughter, Rachael, is in nursing school. One day, her class was talking about different things and the subject of ear candles came up. She inquired further and found that many people use them to get the wax out of their ears.

Later, she went to the health food store and bought some for her and her husband to try out. They liked the results so much, a few months later, they bought some more, to keep on hand.

A couple of weeks ago, Rachael asked my son, Dylan, and I if we would like to try it. I don't have a problem with ear wax but I couldn't resist trying it (I'm such a daredevil)!

It was an interesting experience. First of all, they aren't candles. Ear candles are actually hollow cones made from strips of unbleached cotton or linen dipped in paraffin and/or beeswax and herbs.

It was relaxing because as the flame got closer to my head, the inside of my ear started to feel warm. Then the crackling began which also felt good. The whole process took about 15 minutes. My daughter lit the ear candle for my son and I, and she watched us closely to make sure we didn't catch the house on fire or something. You might think the burnt cone would cause ashes to fall on top of you but the candle is made of material and it doesn't come apart. I think the paper plate is there as a precaution. You think? :)

When the flame got within 2 inches or so from our heads, Rachael took the ear candles out and doused them in a cup of water. Then she cut the candles open to reveal the collected wax. Dylan had a lot more wax than me but I was surprised to see the amount of wax that came out of my ears!

The following night, my mom and aunt came to the house. My mom was scheduled to have a heart stent procedure done at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock the next morning. Since my mom and aunt live an hour and a half from Little Rock, I invited them to spend the night at my house so we could all leave together the following morning (Little Rock is a thirty minute trip from my house).

I asked my mom and aunt if either of them had ever heard of ear candles and when they said they didn't, I proceeded to give them the scoop about how Dylan and I had done it the night before. Of course, they wanted to try it out!

And here's where things got crazy. You don't know how much I wish I had videotaped the whole thing.

We all laughed so hard we were crying. Of course, the video would've been of poor quality because I wouldn't have been able to keep the camera still. It was hysterical! It's a memory none of us will ever forget.

I told Mom, "This would make a great party idea!" Just when everyone is casually sitting around talking, pass out the ear candles and let the fun begin!

I would start out by asking everyone, "What do you think this is used for?" Hehehehehe!

And that's what we folks in Arkansas call a good time!

Thanks for reading!

Laura

Camping Out - Cabin Style!

Deer Lodge CabinsMy son, Dylan, celebrated his 16th birthday last Friday.

Dylan's birthday wish was for the entire family to get together and go on a camping trip. He was hoping everyone would pitch tents but it was way too cold for that! So the family went in together and rented a log cabin in Jasper, Arkansas, which is a two-hour trip from our house.

Unfortunately, the entire family couldn't make the trip but we ended up with a nice size crowd anyway.

Dylan Polk celebrating his 16th BirthdayThe cabin was nice (click here for the slideshow: photos change every 10 seconds)! The cabin had one bedroom, one full bath, and a loft. Sounds cozy until you realize there were fourteen of us!!! :) Believe it or not, everything worked out great. The bedroom had a double bed and the loft had a double bed, a twin bed and a double futon couch. The open living area also had a couch, three love seats, two of which were twin sleepers.

On Friday night, thirteen of us slept on beds or couches (birthday boy-Dylan-slept on the floor in his sleeping bag). And then on Saturday night, six family members went back home, so that left lots more room for us to spread out.

Should you ever want to vacation in the Ozarks, I highly recommend Deer Lodge Cabins.

Dylan after he fell through the iceThe original plan was to do some hiking, some geocaching, and some fishing. There were three ponds on the property filled with bass, bream, catfish and sunperch. Unfortunately, the pond closest to the cabin was frozen solid and it was too cold to go check out the other two ponds. The kids had a blast walking on the ice and birthday boy, Dylan, eventually pressed his luck one too many times and fell through (see the pic to the right). He weighs 245 pounds so it didn't surprise me to see him fall through the ice. Teenagers are sooooo schmaaart!!!

Dylan, Daniel, James, and Jacob standing in front of a frozen waterfallAfter breakfast, everyone headed out to go on a hike and do some geocaching. I stayed behind at the cabin with Brady and a couple of my nieces. Like a bone head, I didn't pack Brady's hat and mittens, and it was bitterly cold. I took him outside after breakfast and he was miserable, so I knew it wouldn't be a wise idea to take him on a long hike.

The family came back a couple hours later and had many great pictures to show me (that's a waterfall of ice behind the boys!).

Later on that evening, my brothers started a fire in the fire pit and we all sat around roasting marshmallows and making S'mores.

Everybody had so much fun spending time together, that we've decided to plan a fishing trip next!

Happy 16th Birthday, Dylan!

Dylan and ClarenceTime goes by so fast, doesn't it?

You were my baby until March 29, 2007, when Brady's birth forced you into the dreaded 'middle child' position.

You needn't have worried about losing your place in the limelight. You shine no matter where you're at or what you're doing.
Dylan 1993
You made a statement right off the bat, weighing 10 pounds, 4-1/2 ounces. The hospital staff was impressed! The first thing I said when you were born was, "He looks like a lumberjack!" You were solid as a rock and looked like a mighty man!

As it was then, so it is now. You impress everyone you come in contact with. At 6 feet 2 inches and 245 pounds, some might even feel intimidated!

Dylan Polk Football 2008It's been a blast watching you play center on the football team and I know you're excited about the upcoming season, having a new coach and all.

There's a time to laugh, a time to cry, a time to walk, and now a time to drive! Well, you already know you didn't get a new car for your birthday (guess the old Taurus will have to do), but at least you got a nice laptop, right?

Oh my goodness, has it really been sixteen years? It's hard for me to believe in two short years, you'll be graduating high school!

I'm not ready for you to leave the nest, yet I know the time is fast approaching. Let's enjoy the time we have left, before you go off to college or join the armed forces or run off to NYC to pursue an acting career. The sky's the limit!

Whatever you decide to do, it's going to be fun watching you grow. Keep smiling, keep laughing, and have fun!

I love you, Sweetie!

Mama

The Heart and The Seed

heartThe New Year makes most people stop and think about their health and I'm no exception.

Last month, my mother told me she was having heart trouble. She noticed her heart was beating too hard and she had a frightening experience where she felt her heart skip (to the point that she thought she was about to die).

To give you some background, my mom (a respiratory therapist) has always been the 'health nut' of our family. She has always maintained her weight, been very active, and careful to eat healthy foods.

Unfortunately, she was a heavy smoker from the time she was 14 to the time of her quitting at the age of 49 (13 years ago). She quit many times in her adult life, but always fell back into the habit.

There's no way to know for sure what caused Mom's artery blockages, but I suspect smoking is the major culprit. It certainly isn't a stretch to imagine the damage smoking did to her heart.

After Mom's scary 'heart skipping' experience, did she go to the hospital? No, she didn't! Instead, she waited until she went to work the next day and ran an EKG on herself. Once she saw the results of the EKG, she called and made an appointment with her doctor.

At her appointment, the doctor ran another EKG but wasn't too concerned, due to the results of the test. My mom asked the doctor if he would like to see the EKG she ran after her 'heart episode', and he said he would. Once the doctor saw the results of her initial EKG, he became quite alarmed and referred Mom to a cardiologist to have an angiogram done.

The angiogram showed Mom had an 80% blockage in her right artery and a 75% blockage in her left artery. The cardiologist then arranged for Mom to undergo a heart stent procedure.

My aunt and I took Mom to the hospital last Thursday, to have the procedure done. It took all of 45 minutes and was very successful. Mom's surgeon showed my aunt and I the before and after photos of Mom's heart. It was fascinating! I told Mom she's going to feel at least ten years younger!

So back to my New Year's resolutions... When someone you love goes through a health challenge, it really gets you to thinking. What does my heart look like? It's very concerning to tell you the truth.

I came across this article today, called "The Seed That Staves Off Heart Disease".

Apparently, eating sesame seeds can help your heart by bringing down cholesterol and boosting blood levels of heart-cell-protective antioxidants.
Out with the Bad, In with the Good

In a study, postmenopausal women who took 50 grams (a little more than 3 tablespoons) of sesame seed powder daily for 5 days reduced their total and bad (LDL) cholesterol. But that's not all. The women also had lower blood levels of substances linked to lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress (both of which cause cell damage) and higher levels of heart-protective vitamin E.
Did you know hummus is made with tahini paste (made from sesame seeds)? I have always wanted to try it. I love Mediterranean food so something tells me I'm going to love it!

As part of my New Year's resolutions, I want to start eating more vegetables. Ideally, I want to make those vegetable servings raw. Supposedly, hummus makes a great veggie dip. If interested, watch this YouTube video of a lady making hummus dip.

I'm going to do something good for my heart and make sesame seeds a regular part of my diet. How about you?

Thanks for reading!

Laura

My 5 New Year's Resolutions

calendar showing Jan 1 with apple and tape measureGoal-setting is a good thing. Even if you fall short of your goals, I believe it's always good to have something you're striving for.

Following are my health goals for this year:

1. Eat more vegetables and fruit. To be specific, my plan is to eat five to six servings of non-starchy vegetables and two servings of fruit every day. I also plan to eat more greens (mustard greens are my favorite).

2. Drink more water. My goal is to drink somewhere between 3 liters and 3.8 liters. For a great hydration calculator click here. Specifically, what I'm doing is - I took a case of bottled water to work (12 - 10 oz bottles), set them on my desk - so they serve as a constant reminder. Then, save the empty bottles, take them home and refill them with purified water (I keep several gallon-jugs at home) and bring them back to work. If I drink at least 10 bottles per day, I've reached my goal.

3. Drink green tea. The health benefits are incredible - one of those being a weight loss booster. For every 10 ozs of green tea I drink, I'll deduct that amount from my daily water goal.

4. Keep a food journal. It's important to know what you're eating and how many calories you're consuming on a daily basis. Most successful dieters say keeping a food journal was critical to their success.

5. Exercise. My goal is to do some form of aerobic exercise for an hour, six days per week (aerobic video tape, biking, fast-walking). Some days I might only exercise thirty minutes but I want to strive for an hour. I also plan to do body weight exercises three times per week.

Have you set your goals yet? If you have any tips for me, please feel free to leave a comment.
