Bacon Is A Vegetable

Country Fried BaconI thought the t-shirt the guy was wearing was funny, so I decided to make that my title.

So, have you heard of this? Country-fried bacon. I mean, C'mon! You might as well call this appetizer, Heart Attack Strips! Oh yeah, it's also served with a side of gravy!

Just this month, Risque Cafe in Lake View (north side neighborhood in Chicago) unveiled this culinary masterpiece.

Look, I love bacon - even though I rarely eat it. But I don't like bacon enough to batter and deep fry it. Yuck. It just doesn't look or sound appetizing to me.

What do you think?

Chicago came up with this food idea?

I would have thought the South would have thunk of it first.

there is no wrong way to have bacon. i'm not certain it needs batter to make it better, but i'm willing to try it.

i wonder if they batter uncooked bacon or if they render it off a little first?

there is another bar in chicago that serves (or used to) bacon like peanuts on tues or wed nights. they just fry it up and throw it out in bowls.

Can you believe it? Bacon strips in a bag sells better than Potato Chips in Brasil. When I first arrived here 4 years ago I was gobsmacked to see great bags of deep fried bacon coils. They look like they are 90% fat.

I just haven't had the courage to try them since I have had a triple bypass.

I love bacon? Do you know what's better than bacon? More bacon. But honestly, that just looks nasty. Now if the wrapped bacon around cheddar cheese chunks, breaded and fried it, you'd have one tasty appetizer!

I would actually try that. I come from a background where battered and fried food was an everyday thing. I think it's time for me to pay Chicago a visit so they can help me regain all the weight I lost lol.

Battered and deep friend bacon? Sounds a little strange. If I want bacon, I prefer the "normal" way. Battered and deep fried sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen. Sounds something like my husband or my father-in-law would would be tempted to try. Then again, my FIL may think twice about, being that he JUST had heart surger.

Okay, that's just plain crazy! Hey, what's in the little, silver cup on the side of the plate? I'm curious.

Paul - I know! Who'da thunk?!

Chris - Go for it, Chris! :) I bet they batter uncooked bacon but I don't know. I've never heard of a bar serving bacon in lieu of peanuts. That's wild!

Health Assistant - Good word! But I don't know about the delicious part. Deep fried bacon is a little too much for my tastes!

Leo - I'm with you!

Fitness Diva - I know! It's beyond the pale isn't it?

Urso - I think you're smart to stay away from them too! I wouldn't be surprised to see the U.S. start selling them too. The closest thing we have to bacon strips in a bag is pork rinds.

Preston - I love bacon too but this just looks gross. I'm with you - bacon wrapped around cheese then deep fried - I might give that a try!

Natalie - I agree!

Angel - Funny girl! Just be sure to eat a salad with it and then you won't feel as guilty. :)

Ann - You're right! It does look like something that would appeal more to guys than girls.

Cy - Y'know, curiosity killed the cat! This wonderful little appetizer is served with a side of white gravy. Does that get you salivating?
