6 Helpful Entrecard Dropping Tips

Entrecard
Dropping

Some Entrecarders like dropping and some don't. I like it for the free advertising it provides. I buy Entrecard credits when I have to but I'd much rather use Entrecard credits I've earned by dropping.

Some Entrecarders don't like dropping because it takes too much time (due to the slow page loading of most sites). I know what you mean! I can't tell you how many times my browser has locked up and I've had to shut the browser down and start over.

I have some great tips below that will help you out in this area so keep reading!

The Wonderful World of Blogs

Entrecard is a great social network of bloggers. If it weren't for Entrecard, I wouldn't have found so many wonderful blogs. Over the past nine months, I have gotten to know many of the bloggers and look forward to visiting their blogs daily and seeing what they're up to.

More often than not, I'm a drop-and-runner (meaning I drop my Entrecard and leave immediately). The reason for this is that I don't have a lot of free time (work, a baby etc.) and have to maximize every bit of time I have. The thing is... even though I drop and run most of the time, I always catch the title of the first post on every blog I visit. If the post interests me, I leave a comment.

Following are a few of my favorite blogs:

Computer Hell

Last week was a bad week for me, "dropping-wise".

While dropping, my PC was bombarded by several trojans. My antivirus software, Windows Live One Care, kindly notified me that it had thwarted the attack and asked if I wanted to clean my PC of every trace. I said yes and thought all was well. It became quickly apparent that all was not well. No, not well at all.

Throughout the night and the following day, I kept getting annoying popups even when my browser wasn't open. Then when I would get on Firefox and do anything, I would get notified again of another trojan attack. I knew I was in big trouble.

I checked Entrecard's forums, but couldn't find anyone experiencing any problems with trojans or viruses.

When something like this has happened in the past (and it has happened to me many times), since this is a company-owned PC, I would take it into work and have the hard drive ghosted (wiped clean). Then I would have to take several hours to reinstall all of the software! As you can imagine, I didn't want to do this but I didn't think I had any choice.

Super Anti-SpywareMalwareBytes Anti-MalwareThe first thing I did was write down the names of the trojans that had attacked my PC. I can't remember all of them but one of them was Vundo. Then I ran a complete scan with Windows Live One Care. I researched online about the particular trojans that I was dealing with. Many reputable sites recommended running a program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as well as Super Anti-Spyware. So I downloaded them and did a complete scan using those programs. It was also recommended that I download a program called Vundofix and to run it if Malwarebytes did not remove the trojan. I ran Vundofix just in case and it said that Vundo was not found on my PC.

Even though Vundo was no longer found on my PC and my antivirus program did not find anything harmful, I continued to get alerts saying a trojan was trying to get in my PC. I was also still having that annoying pop-up problem.

So I took my PC into the office the following morning to get what I needed off the hard drive in preparation for turning it over to the tech. But before I did that, I decided to reach out to the Entrecard community. I wanted to get their software recommendations for antivirus/anti-malware/anti-spyware.

Web Blog of Greg MathewsI thought my best bet would be to contact some of Entrecard's top droppers. So I went to the Web Blog of Greg Mathews to find out who the top droppers were. Greg developed a site called Dropaholics.com. (check out the Dropaholics widget on my right sidebar).

So I went down the Top 100 Dropaholic list, clicked on their websites, then on their Entrecard widget and clicked "Send a message to this user".

I quickly found out Entrecard has a great community. The response was phenomenal! Following is the summary:

1. Browsers

FirefoxDo NOT use Internet Explorer, but DO use Firefox (I knew this and have been using Firefox exclusively for over a year. I'm listing it here for those who may not know of IE's security flaws).

Unfortunately, the trojans got through Firefox so you definitely need good antivirus and spyware protection for safety on the net. I also found out that you should configure your Firefox settings for a safer browsing experience (see details below).

2. Antivirus

The majority of Entrecarders use Norton or Norton360 for antivirus protection. Coming in for a strong second place finish was McAfee. Third place went to freeware Avast.

Windmill on the HillAvastThere was one person that went above and beyond, and that is Windmill of Windmill on the Hill. Windmill told me, "Microsoft has done some great things, but there are a few features that come packed with their OS that isn't worth its salt - one of them certainly is Live One Care." I thought to myself, "Now, doesn't that sound about right? Just my luck!"

AVGAs did many other Entrecarders, Windmill recommended that I use Avast antivirus and AVG Antispyware. He also recommended that I use Ad-Aware in addition to the others. Windmill then went to the trouble of setting up a special download depot where I could download the freeware from his site. I really appreciate your help, Windmill! :)

After installing/running Avast and AVG, my PC was cleared of all malware and spyware. I have had a safe browsing/dropping experience ever since the installation.

NoScript3. NoScript and Flashblock

Technically EasyPaul over at Technically Easy told me he uses AVG as well as Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. In addition, he told me when dropping Entrecards, he uses his own droplist of sites, and also uses Firefox with the following add-ons: NoScript and Flashblock.

Paul also told me that Turnip had a post on how to make NoScript work with Entrecard.

"The NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java, Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank), and provides the most powerful Anti-XSS protection available in a browser. "

"Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content."

Turnip of PowerI googled "noscript"+"entrecard" and lo and behold, the first article listed was Turnip of Power's article, Configuring Firefox Noscript Add-on for Entrecard.

The only thing I would add to his instructions, is on the Whitelist tab (Tools/Addons/NoScript Options), add the following sites: amazonaws.com and entrecard.com.

Update: In addition to Turnip's instructions, make the following changes to your NoScript settings (otherwise, you may have trouble getting NoScript to work with Entrecard).

Memories Frozen in TimeRaquel at Memories Frozen in Time, told me the antivirus software she used but she also told me something else that piqued my interest. She mentioned that in addition to using JunkieYarddotComNoScript, she disables images in Firefox, thereby enabling her to drop 300 cards in 30 minutes! She also said that she uses a droplist of 150 of her favorite sites (saved in Firefox-20 sites/folder) and drops the remaining 150 from her Entrecard inbox. Thanks, Raquel for the tips! :) JunkieYardDotCom has a post detailing how to set up NoScript as well as how to disable images for quick dropping.

Note: It's easy to change the settings on NoScript. Just click on the S in the bottom right-hand corner and select "Temporarily allow all this page" or allow whatever scripts you want to run.

4. Entrecard Toolbar

Entrecard Toolbar
Entrecard's toolbar was designed to work with Firefox 3.

Beetle's Memories and RamblingsThanks to Babs at Beetle's Memories and Ramblings, I discovered that it also works on Flock's browser.Flock

But in order for the Entrecard toolbar to work on Flock, you will need to download the 0.91 BETA Entrecard Toolbar.

Note: I like Entrecard's toolbar and have used it since it's creation and will continue to do so. However, some Entrecarders do not use the toolbar because they believe it is a security risk.

The cool thing about Entrecard's toolbar is that you can pull from your Favorites, Inbox, Popular Sites, or by Category. There is a single arrow for pulling one site at a time or you can click the double arrow to pull ten sites per click.

Sometimes when dropping, I open up Firefox and Flock and drop from both. While 10 sites are loading on Firefox, I'm dropping 10 sites on Flock, then I switch back and forth.

5. Want More Traffic?

Place your Entrecard widget above the fold. If you don't think Entrecard traffic is worthwhile, then leave it wherever you please. If, on the other hand, you want to gain valuable readers, you'd be well advised to make the Entrecard widget easy to find.

6. A Freebie

Websites are read from left to right. If you want people to read your content before they drop and leave, you should place your Entrecard widget after your content. In other words, I have a 3-column blog. I placed my Entrecard widget on the third column (above the fold) so that people have to wait for my content to load before they can see the widget.

Also, if you want to improve your page load time, place your javascript widgets below your content. That way, people can read your content right away instead of having to wait for all those widgets to load. Make sense?

Leave me some comments and let me know what you think about all this. If something doesn't make sense to you, leave questions in the comments.

Thanks for reading!

Laura

Thanks for the great tips! Almost all of the sites you listed as some of your favorites are on my favorites list, too. Thank you so much for including me, also.

Great post Laura

But you didn't say if/how you managed to get rid of the trojans and popups etc

It's also good to know that the Top 100 Dropaholics list has been a help in your situation.

I started a thread on entrecard about viruses last week. I am still having problems with Virtumonde (trojans) I only drop with Firefox and have scaled way back in the last few days in the hopes of developing a list like yours (which includes most of my favorites) that I consider "safe". Most of my problems started around the time entrecard did their upgrade.

Sandee (Comedy +) said...

I'm glad to be in your list of favorites. Thanks for all the additional information concerning Entrecard. I'm going to disable images right now.

Have a terrific day. :)

Hi Laura,
Great ideas Laura! I always use Firefox for it's add-ons and diversity. It's the freedom fighter's browser..

THANKS for the tips, I love entrecard and hate to think I would have to stop using it because of those trojans and popups.

I will try all the tips you gave.

Daisy - You're welcome! Problem is, I have so many more. It was hard finding a stopping place.

Greg - Thanks! I stayed up until 5:00 a.m. writing this post so it's no wonder I left off something important like that. Yes, the programs, Avast and AVG have prevented any trojans or viruses from getting in. You're Top 100 Dropaholic's was very helpful. Thanks again! :)

Furkidsmom - I had Virtumonde last week too. Very irritating! I hope you get everything fixed soon!

Sandee - You're welcome! :)

John - Thanks! :) Firefox and Flock are awesome browsers.

A Trivita Mom - I hope you find the tips as useful as I did. Thanks for stopping by! :)

How did you fix the Virtumonde? I am using Avast, Spybot and Ad-aware and can't get rid of it permanently.

First of all, thanks for having me on your favorites list! You rock, Laura, and I enjoy reading your blog too!

Also, I've been going through some computer woes myself, as you might know. I will definitely be coming back to this page and copying some of the hints you posted here. SO useful, and very much needed.
Some days, I really don't want to drop at all because it is such a chore, with some sites taking 2 minutes to load, and now that I'm on an old PC, I can't even get multiple tabs to open (even though I've configured Firefox to do so), so I gotta drop my cards one at a time! I have to do it in 2 or 3 shifts, spread over the day, it takes so long. I'm going to try to use some of the tips and programs you posted and see if this can help.

Thanks for being so generous and taking the time to post all these links (i know that musta been quite some job getting this post done!) and sharing this info!
More probably could use it than you even know!

BTW, just like some of the others that responded, I'm creating my own list, too. It's just easier to drop from that instead of using the Entrecard interface, which can be slow as heck on certain days and at certain hours. I will keep working on that!

Take care!

WOW!! What a great post, full of very helpful information. Thanks for all the tips. The best thing about EC, besides the traffic, is all of the helpful bloggers out there ready and willing to step up and help out. Thanks for sharing your experiences and info.

Great tips! I hadn't heard of some of the things mentioned so thanks for taking the time to inform us all!

Many thanks for the useful tips. Personally, I still prefer Vipre and using Firefox because I've had no problems. As for dropping, I can complete it in a minimal amount of time.

I must admit that until now I haven't commented on your blog and have just been doing the "drop and run thing." I figure that being an old fart of 61 I'm beyond living a "healthy lifsttyle" and figure that I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in! But, today, I actually DID read some of your entries and maybe between you and your hubby there's still hope in convincing me!

All the best to you and your family for this holiday season!

Furkidsmom - I've updated the post to include more info about the nasty trojans (incl. Vundo - a.k.a. Virtumonde) that I was dealing with. I recommend you run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Vundofix. Hopefully, that will do the trick for ya!

Fitness Diva - You're welcome, I love your blog too! I'm glad you found the post useful. Computers! AAARRRGGGHHH! They drive me crazy sometimes. So, yes, I can truly relate to your computer woes. Hang in there!

Rose Works Jewelry - Thanks!

Lynne - You're welcome! I agree, the Entrecard community is awesome!

Beaded Tail - You're welcome! I'm glad you found the tips useful.

Robin - Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. And 61 isn't old! :) I'm glad you enjoyed reading the blog. Merry Christmas to you too!

Wow Laura, I can only imagine how much research and work you put into this post. What terrific advice and tips. Thank you for sharing and thank you for the exposure in your article. I really appreciate it.

Thank you. We are going through your recommendations right now. I used my husband's laptop to do my drops on Sat the 13th because we were traveling and I couldn't get mine on the hotel internet. I got his infected with the trojan vundu and can't get rid of it. McAfee was such a help - their software didn't catch it but they offered to disinfect it for $90.

BTW - I googled "entrecard trojan" and your post was at the top :-)

Hi Laura, thanks for the post and link love. These are a great tips for everybody. About disabling the images, I only use it sometimes especially when I am in a hurry. Ha-ha..seeing a skeleton structure website is not fun.

Wow, what a great article! Thanks so much for sharing all the wisdom you gathered from those in the know. You're right: Entrecard IS a great community, and you really got a lot of good advice, some of which I intend to follow, including looking into that Dropaholics widget -- cute!

Thanks so much for including me in your list of blogs. I'm really honored. Many of those are my favorites, too, and the ones I've not heard of, well, I'm off to check them out!

That was very interesting! I shall try the 'No Script' add on in Flock. Hope it works. Also the no images. I am constantly getting frozen out with some of these blogs and their dodgy scripts. Dropping is becoming a major job lately. I would love to get back to some smooth dropping :O) Thanks for the link back too!

Very well said! Thank you for shedding some light on these mysterious pop-ups. I also drop from my dropslist (about 21 folders of 10 sites each) and then I drop the rest from the toolbar. Yes, I am back to using the toolbar. Ever since I installed the NoScript, thanks to you, I have not had my browser crash. Thank you again for the timely information.

Matt - I'm glad you found the information useful! Yes, it took a LONG time. I can't start writing a post until after my toddler is asleep (and sometimes that's around 10pm)! I can't remember what time I started but before I knew it, it was 2am, then 3, then 4 and then 5am! I couldn't believe it. Of course it's my fault. I make it hard on myself doing all those graphics instead of just using text links. My husband, Paul, says it's because I'm a first-born perfectionist. I guess so.

Kim - Aww, isn't that sweet of McAfee! Oh brother. I hope you get your laptop straightened out. I know I've said this before but computers drive me CRAZY!!! I'm glad you found the post useful. Wow, that's pretty cool about coming up top of the Google search. :)

Happy Mom - Welcome to Entrecard! I'm glad you liked the post. :)

Raquel - I agree with you, turning off images and javascript is useful when you're in a hurry... which is most of the time for me! It has made a big difference in drop time for Paul and I and for that we thank you!

JD - Thanks! I'm glad you liked the post. It was a pleasure listing your blog as one of my favs. :)

Babs - Yeah, the NoScript has been a lifesaver as far as saving page-load time. I like how you can configure it to show only what you want to see... very cool! I downloaded in Flock and it works great! Turning images off is great because it allows you to spot the Entrecard widget in a flash. I love it! It was my pleasure linking to your blog. I think your block is great! I agree dropping is a chore when your browser is constantly freezing up (it was happening to me all the time)! Thanks for stumbling the post! :)

Davida - You don't have to work any harder... you've already earned my devotion. I love your blog! It was past 3am when I started adding those blogs and I just didn't think of your blog at the time that's all. There are so many more blogs I love but I had to put a stop to my list somewhere. Yes, I'm glad to have my PC back up and running. I'm glad you liked the post! :)

Tim - I'm glad you liked the post! I like using the toolbar too especially now using NoScript.

Bartolomo - I'm glad you liked the post! :)

Ktales - Wow, dropping your body fat down to 3-4%! That just boggles my mind! I'm sure you'll be successful. I'm glad you found the post useful. :)

Thanks for both the tips and the link. That blasted Vundo thing seems to be crawling all over the Web these days -- it's an old virus, too. Wonder why it's popping up again?

By the way, I've been horrible at dropping as of late -- family obligations for Christmas and all that.

Oh well...

And (once again) Merry Christmas (we can still say that here in Arkansas, right?)

Great article, Laura! We use Firefox and the EntreCard Toolbar to drop from. We use Norton's Internet Security and a firewall and wouldn't think of accessing the internet without either of them. Last week Norton's blocked LOTS of attacks... Easily far more than any other week!

We stopped dropping on junk sites, slow-loading sites, sites where we have to hunt the card or sites that have music or video auto-playing. We know we can disable images, but being a photo journal blog, a photo is often the very reason we notice a blog or really enjoy it, so we do not disable them.

Thank you very much for including us on your short list! A lot of the blogs you listed are also among our favorites.

VH said...

Those were some awesome tips! I really like Memories Frozen in Time's idea of disabling images in Firefox--why didn't I think of that?
Thanks for including my blog as a fave--it's an honor:)

Thanks for including me in your drops list! This was a very useful article and I can see how many people you've helped already. I basically second what Gandalf and Grayson said. I've been lucky so far. One thing about Spybot, if anyone's using it, you need to keep it updated manually. Always check for updates and then reimmunize. I do this once weekly. Thanks again for the great tips!

We switched from Avast to AVG last night. AVG found 10 Trojan horses :(

We did try to disable the photos, but we miss seeing lots of our pals pictures. We're trying to set up our own list of favorites who drop back on us.

Great tips! Thanks so much for taking the time to write such an informative post! I use FireFox exclusively (except when I HAVE to use IE for various things...which thankfully isn't often!) I have enjoyed discovering new blogs through EntreCard, and have appreciated the traffic it brings to mine as well.

So far I've been lucky and haven't been inundated with any Trojans or the like, but I'll be taking measures to make sure it doesn't happen by utilizing your great tips! :)

Our computer is a mess. Now we can only boot up for a few minutes and it crashes. Spybot says it is clean, AVG says it is clean, but it still crashes and won't let us run anything that might fix it. We want to put Norton on it, but everytime we try to update and run it, the computer shuts down. Dad is going to try something else tomorrow 'cause Mom doesn't like working on the laptop. Mom won't go anywhere near Entrecard now since lots of other people are saying they've gotten viruses from it.

Barb of Gandalf & Grayson - Thank you! I agree, disabling images makes for a very boring web experience. I only do it if I'm incredibly short on time and want to get my drops done in a hurry. I'm thinking about going back to Norton. I had Norton for a long time and then something happened (I can't remember what) and I switched to Kapersky (it's on the laptop Paul uses and has worked great - it's just so incredibly obtrusive). Thanks for commenting!

Furkidsmom - I hate that your PC is all messed up. I can relate to what you're going through, except my PC wasn't crashing. I hope you get it fixed! It's so AGGRAVATING! You may need to have the hard drive wiped clean and start from scratch. For the NoScript to work, you have to add 'amazonaws.com' as well as 'entrecard.com' to the whitelist in order for the Entrecard widget to be displayed. Once your laptop is up and running again, and you have Norton installed (along with a good AntiSpyware), I recommend NoScript for Firefox as another preventative measure. I agree with what you said regarding the disabling of images. It makes for a very boring web experience. :( I also think having your own drop list is an excellent idea! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

John B - Thank you! I'm glad you found the post useful. And you're welcome on the link love. I hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas. Happy New Year to you too! :)

Emily - Thanks! I hate waiting for pages to load too. I can't tell you how many times it has locked my Firefox and/or Flock up and I've had to shut it down and restart it (over and over again). UUUGGGHHH! Very frustrating. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Kim of What's That Smell - Thanks and you're welcome! I'm glad you liked the post.

Gengen - You're welcome! I'm glad you found the post helpful. The long page load time locks my Firefox and Flock up too. It's very frustrating.

Stacy - Thank you and you're welcome! I have also enjoyed discovering many great blogs through Entrecard. I'm glad you found the post useful. :)

Hi again,

I just wanted to give an update on this thread. I had to reformat my hard drive because the Trojans had managed to get so far into the system. I am terrified of returning to entrecard, so I am trying to piece together my favorite blogs again. I had tons saved on my entrecard toolbar.

I am going to let my current ads run out and stay FAR FAR away from entrecard. The sad thing is, I've found many blogs by dropping...the good thing is - I can now take the time to comment more!!

Davida - Twas my pleasure! :) Your blog is great!

Tisha - You're welcome! I'm glad you found the post useful.

Furkidsmom - I'm sure sorry to hear that you've left Entrecard but I understand completely. If it makes any difference, know you're not the only one that has experienced these awful trojans. Should you decide to come back to Entrecard in the future, as long as you have good PC security (I recommend AVG Internet Security - cuz it has a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam etc.), you shouldn't have any problems. I agree, Entrecard has been a great tool for discovering wonderful blogs that I wouldn't have found otherwise. Have you considered staying an Entrecard member, keeping the widget on your blog and just dropping daily on the blogs you trust?
